I have been running TrueNAS/FreeNAS for a while now. The journey started when my friend gave me a bunch of 500GB HDDs. I bought a Fractal Node 304 case which can contain up to six 3.5" disks. They can’t be added/removed from the case without stopping the server tho. After installing them in the case, I then created one VDEV with raidz-2 made of 5 disks. This gave me almost 1.
I really liked that the development of FreeNAS moved to TrueNAS and specially TrueNAS scale. All my servers are running Debian so having my NAS running the same OS was a great update. On top of that, TrueNAS scale comes with a new application management built on top of Kubernetes. I use Kubernetes a lot at work but I feel like using it at home for smaller scale projects is overkill, that’s why I have all my services running on Docker only.
Welcome to the blog part of my website. My plan is to create posts from time to time describing tech related things that I have been working with or challenges that I have been facing and hopefully provide a solution :). Life is quite busy at the moment so let’s see what happens.
